As part of my recent analysis for another client I realized there are a lot of owners in the West Loop that haven’t taken advantage of the Homeowner Exemption, available to every owner occupied unit in Cook County.
The bad news is that you could have been saving approximately $400 per year since you purchased your unit. The good news is that you can very easily, and quickly, file the exemption with the Assessor’s Office so you claim the Exemption moving forward. It should not take more than 10 minutes to complete either of the forms. In addition, you can also appeal the previous property tax bills (up to 3 years) and potentially receive direct payment for those tax years as well.
